Best Beaches Near Ierapetra for Families

Koutsounari Beach (Long Beach)
Spacious and clean, this beach offers organized areas with cafes and restaurants on the beach, but also plenty of unorganized for free roaming. Also important access is easy just off the main road and plenty of on beach parking. Note the beach is 3km long so picking the right spot is a matter of preference. Here are some notable spots

Starting for the far left is Kakkos bay, a small picturesque protected from wind cove, partially utilized by the kakkos bay Hotel and NALU all day pool café ( with kids pool) , its very organized and high standards, with sea view restaurant, café, showers/toilets, playground, sunbeds and beach delivery. A set of 2 sunbeds and umbrella costs around 10euro. Plenty of parking is available just before the Nalu Café.

The well organized and clean facilities, easy of access, casual menu and variety of activities make this a top location for families with toddlers.

The next spot is the Psaropoula Beach, named after the Psaropoula Tavern, the traditional and favourite seafood restaraunt on the beach. Access is very easy just 100meters off the main road, however parking can be difficult during peak season and times.

On the same spot is the renowned Pelagos seaside restaurant, a fusion of traditional / modern awarded gourmet restaurant, which offers free parking for customers.

Both restaurants offer sunbeds sets in front of their establishment, priced between 2-4 euro/ set.

Both restaurants are highly recommended for the dining experiences , especially in evening.

However, the beach may not be ideal for families with toddlers, as the beach has a steep descent to deep water, relatively crowded and difficult parking.

The third spot from the left is in front of the Mare Blue hotel, with the watersport center.

Nice for older children and watersport activities , but not for ideal for toddlers.

4th spot, is the beach in front of Alatsi tou Vasili restaurant, popular for seafood/meze .

The relaxed beachside atmosphere, friendly service, easy parking and access, and shady outdoor seating under trees on the sand is ideal for parents keeping an eye on little ones while they play.

The restaurant offers free shaded umbrellas on the beach.

Note, the restaurant does not take reservations, so can be fully booked in peak season.

5th spot German bunker, this is a vast undeveloped area, and center of the long beach, park freely, bring your umbrella and pitch it on the water!!

6th  area on the Right side, is the area from Koralli restaurant and pool bar and Almyra Hotel Village. The most popular for families with small children.

The area serviced by Koralli, offers sunbeds for 4 euro/set, beach delivery, playground, large pool, kids pool, café/bar and restaurant and toilers/showers/change rooms, and plenty of easy access parking.

This area is preferred by locals with toddlers, due to very easy and flat access, good amenities, the shallowest part of long beach, good casual menu, and affordable prices.

You can also access from the beach the toddler water slides and kids pool of the Almyra complex if you buy something from their pool bar.

7th spot extreme right and beyond the koralli, is another vast undeveloped area, popular with naturalists.

Locals’ Opinion on Koutsounari – Long Beach:

This is one of the best beaches for families with young children. During summer, and thanks to the prevailing northerly winds (called Meltemi) , this south-facing beach is usually calm, with hardly any waves. The sand is slightly coarse—comfortable enough to walk and lie on, yet not so fine that you carry half the beach home with you.

The water here is some of the cleanest and clearest on Crete. With no land opposite, only the vast Mediterranean Sea, the prevailing winds naturally keep the surface clear, while the coarse sand filters any murkiness. The beach is spacious, so your children can play freely without disturbing anyone, and you can relax without being crowded. Access is easy, just 300 meters from the main highway, with plenty of parking available right by the beach.

The best time to visit is during evening sunsets, when the sky turns a stunning red, the sun is less intense, and any wind typically weaken due to thermal differences—pure magic!

On the rare occasion of a strong southern wind, it’s a perfect opportunity to explore a northern beach like Voulisma. If northerly winds exceed 6 Beaufort, look for protected coves such as Kakkos Bay, Achlia, and Myrtos Beach.

Agios Andreas Beach near Ierapetra town
A quiet option with calm waters, perfect for toddlers who are just getting comfortable in the sea.

Makry Gialos Beach
Makry Gialos is an ideal holiday destination for families with toddlers mainly because of its exceptionally safe and child-friendly beach. The long fine sandy shoreline slopes very gently into shallow, calm water, allowing small children to splash and play safely close to shore. The village itself is compact and walkable, with everything—beach, tavernas, mini-markets, and pharmacies—within short, flat distances, making it easy with a stroller. Unlike larger and busier cities such as Heraklion or Chania, Makry Gialos offers a quiet, low-traffic environment that feels relaxed and manageable for parents.

Another big advantage is the beachfront dining culture: many cafés and tavernas place tables directly on or next to the sand, so toddlers can play nearby while parents eat—effectively creating a natural “play area” without needing a formal playground. Makry Gialos provides a calm, stress-free setting that suits young children and their parents perfectly.

Compared to busier north coast resorts like Malia or Hersonissos, the beaches in southern Crete are far more relaxed and family-oriented.

Other popular shallow sandy nearby beaches on the way to Agios Nikolaos less than 30minutes include Voulisma, Amoudara and Almyro Beach.
